Elves, Inspired by Raphael (January 17,2008)

After seeing the latest creature updates, the one that made the biggest impression was seeing that my old friend and Legend Kaysa was now an elf.  There is nothing like seeing a fifth (or so) Elf Lord, not even counting Priest of Titania or considering that most of the Lords aren't even Legendary.

They are now the race of truly great and inspiration leaders, beating out even the filthy Humans.  Big elves!  More elves!  Limitless mana!  Untargetable!  Forestwalk!  It is truly good to be an Elf in the current environment.  There is so much potential and so little time.  WOTC had an article that showed that if you just splash blue for Intruder Alarm and use any kind of mana sink, it's just game over on turn 4.  However, I will set aside the awesome possibilities in your paper card collection and focus on the great decks available in MTGO.  Heck, let me just focus on standard and present a deck that will slap a lot of other competitive decks around.  Dang!  MTGO and Standard will both rule out Kaysa (Alliances) which was the entire point of this discussion.  Ah well, let's give it a go anyway...

Okay, let's start with the the obvious available elf Lords in Standard:

4 Elvish Champion

4 Imperious Perfect

Add in elves to produce more elves:

4 Lys Alana Huntsman

Add in elves to find more elves and Elf Lords:

4 Elvish Harbinger

and, of course, elves to accelerate your mana for still more elves:

4 Llanowar Elves

4 Boreal Druid

That gives us 24 cards without even thinking deeply about strategy or winning.  Clearly it is going to be one of those decks that pretty much builds itself.  For instance, with so many elves, you might as well through in one of the most efficient elves available with an elf in hand:

4 Wren's Run Vanquisher

Then there is the answer to the triva question that everyone forgets about, which is 'What is the largest elf in Standard?'

2 Allosaurus Riders

Clearly, running out of cards is an issue so we need to throw in the best card drawing green has to offer...

4 Harmonize

Wow!  That's 34 cards without even thinking about it.  The rest is up to the style of the player.  I'm an oddball and have no problem running my deck count as high as 70, so I'm adding the following to fill out the deck:

1 Rootgrapple (Gotta kill the Planeswalkers - maybe 2 or 3 would be better taking out other dead weight listed below)

1 Primal Command

1 Leaf Glider

1 Elvish Promenade (has yet to actually help me but I don't care much)

4 Jagged-Scar Archers (too awesome not to use)

2 Immaculate Magistrate (also quite cool though I seldom get to use them)

Finally, I guess I'll need some land.  Might as well keep it simple.  I have a lot of mana producing 1 drops so I can skimp a little.

26 Forest

Total count is 70.  I've played my deck for several hours and have had a lot of fun (and wins) with this deck.  Tweak the final 2, 6, or 10 slots depending on taste and acceptable deck size and see if it works for you!

What's that?  How much does this deck cost?  Well, the cards that make up the 34 card base is a very reasonable 20.84 tickets.  The deck listed that I'm currently playing is a mere 23.45 tickets.  Certainly a bargain deck considering the vast number of wins this obvious but very solid deck is sure to provide you!
